City Workers Eyeing a Regional Shift

A growing number of Australians living in capital cities are rethinking city life, with a major shift toward regional living gaining momentum.

New research from the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) reveals that 4 in 10 city dwellers would consider relocating to regional areas — nearly double the interest seen just two years ago.
The driving force behind this trend? Flexibility. With remote and hybrid work models now mainstream, 47% of potential movers say they would keep their existing job while working from a regional location. Another third say they’d be open to finding new employment within their chosen regional community.

What’s more, this isn’t just a distant dream. Around 61% of those surveyed say they plan to make the move within the next five years. Families with school-aged children are leading the charge — indicating a long-term shift in where Australians want to live, work, and raise a family.
RAI CEO Liz Ritchie says the trend could be a game-changer for regional economies. “We’re seeing an appetite not just for lifestyle, but for connection, community, and affordability. Regional towns that plan ahead will be in the best position to harness this opportunity.” Top motivations for the move include better work-life balance, more affordable housing, lower living costs, and a stronger connection to nature.
